Nintendo Switch Successor Next-Gen Console 2024 Portable Hybrid Release Date

Nintendo’s next console will reportedly be portable like the Switch and is targeting a release in the second half of 2024, according to a new report today from VideoGamesChronicle

VGC cites “multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo’s next-gen console plans” that reveal Nintendo’s Switch successor is aiming for a release in the second half of next year, to ensure there’s plenty of stock at launch. Nintendo wants to avoid the stock shortages that plagued the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S release for months (and years for some).

The publication reports that two of its sources suggest the next-generation console will use LCD screens, like those seen on the launch versions of the Switch, rather than the OLED screens used in the Switch OLED models. The use of LCD reduces costs, VGC writes, in light of the likely need for significantly more storage than what’s in the Switch, which will increase costs.

VGC’s sources also suggest Nintendo’s next console will be playable on the go, similar to the Switch’s console-handheld hybrid nature. Its sources also say the console will continue using physical cartridges like the Switch, although it’s unclear if this console will be backwards compatible with the Switch.

In February of last year, Nintendo said the Switch was in the middle of its lifecycle, meaning that while a new Nintendo console might launch next year, the company might not necessarily abandon the Switch any time soon. However, if Nintendo continues support of the Switch alongside a next-gen console, it’s unclear how that will work as, presumably, this new console will be a good bit more powerful than the Switch.

Regardless of how Nintendo approaches Switch support following the release of a new console and backwards compatibility, the Super Mario Bros. maker likely wants to convert the Switch’s massive install base into its following product.

Mortal Kombat 1 Geras Fighter Reveal Trailer Gameplay Keepers of Time Liu Kang Fatality

NetherRealm Studios has released two new Mortal Kombat 1 trailers, one focused on the Keepers of Time and the other on Geras, a Mortal Kombat 11 debut character returning as a playable fighter.

The Mortal Kombat studio has released a steady flow of trailers and gameplay since its MK1 reveal back in May, and that continued over the weekend with two new showcases pulling back the curtains on the Keepers of Time faction and sand-wielding warrior Geras. In the former, we get another look at Liu Kang and a new fatality for him, and the latter showcases Geras’ move set and his fatality.

You can check out the MK1 Keepers of Time trailer for yourself below

And you can watch the MK1 Geras trailer below after that

Over the weekend, MK1 director Ed Boon tweeted an image with what many think might be a new character debuting in the game. Boon writes, “New phone. Who dis?” and circles the unknown character, leading many to believe it’s a tease of a new fighter.

PlayStatoin 5 system software beta update dolby atmos audio 8TB SSD

Sony has revealed a new PlayStation 5 system software beta rolling out today that brings the highly requested audio format, Dolby Atmos, to the console alongside a larger SSD capacity, accessibility features, and more.

Since the launch of the PS5, audiophiles have asked for Dolby Atmos audio support on the console. Without diving too deep into the nitty gritty, Dolby Atmos is one of the best audio formats when adequately supported. While the PS5’s 3D Tempest audio tech is impressive, players have also wished for Dolby Atmos support. And now, with the latest system software beta, it has arrived.

“3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech can now be enjoyed by those who own compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs, or home theater systems,” a PlayStation Blog post reads. “Tempest 3D AudioTech specifically renders to the Dolby Atmos audio devices in use – including overhead channels – allowing for even greater levels of immersion in the audio scapes of PS5 games.”

Dolby Atmos will be a new setting in the “Audio Format (Priority)" section of the PS5’s Audio Output menu, alongside Linear PCM, Dolby Audio, and DTS.

Elsewhere in the update, the PlayStation 5 can now support M.2 SSDs with a new maximum capacity of 8TB, which is double its previous 4TB limit. You still need to use an SSD with a heatsink, so don’t forget that if you upgrade your SSD.

On the accessibility side, this system software beta brings two new features to the console: second controller assistance and system UI haptic feedback. With this update, you can now use a second DualSense controller to count as an “assist controller” and use these two different controllers as if they were one.

With system UI haptic feedback, you can now enable the DualSense’s haptic feedback when navigating the PS5’s various menus and UI. Essentially, the sound effects you typically hear when navigating the menu will also be reflected physically through haptic feedback now.

PlayStation 5 System Software Update Beta Dolby Atmos Accessibility

This new system update features even more, too, like improved party UI, share screen preview, a Game Hub tournaments tile, and more so head to the full PlayStation Blog post for more details.

To access this PS5 system software beta, you must receive an invite from PlayStation. Those invites are rolling out today.

For more about the PS5, read how it recently surpassed 40 million units sold, and then check out Game Informer’s PS5 review. After that, read Game Informer’s list of the top 10 best PS5 games.

Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail Expansion MMO Summer 2024 Release Date

Final Fantasy XIV is finally coming to Xbox Series X/S next spring.

Xbox head Phil Spencer joined Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida on stage today, during Day 1 of Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2023, to reveal the news.

Here's what Spencer had to say:

"It's great to be here with so many warriors of light. Thank you for the very warm welcome. The Xbox community is passionate about games, and like so many players around the world, the Final Fantasy series is one that gets lots of love from Team Xbox. And we're very happy to announce the Xbox version of Final Fantasy XIV with my friend Yoshida-San today. Together with his team, we are bringing the best online experience of this game to Xbox fans everywhere, and through crossplay, you can experience Final Fantasy XIV with old and new players alike."

Spencer says this is a seminal moment "in our relationship with you and the Final Fantasy team as we look to partner more closely together in the future," perhaps teasing more Final Fantasy to come to Xbox down the line.

While the game will be playable on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series X, Yoshida says only the Series X version will support 4K resolution. The Xbox version of Final Fantasy XIV is expected sometime during the spring of 2024. Before the release of 7.0 and during Patch 6.5X, there will be an open beta scheduled for the Xbox version.

This means the Dawntrail expansion will be playable on Xbox Series X/S at launch. Like with other platforms, Final Fantasy XIV will only be available as a digital release on Xbox. You can go straight from the Open Beta to the full version, too, as saved data and progress transfers over.

For more about Final Fantasy XIV, watch the reveal trailer for Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail and then read Game Informer's Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker review

Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail Expansion MMO Summer 2024 Release Date

Final Fantasy XIV publisher Square Enix and developer Creative Business Unit III have revealed Dawntrail, the MMO’s next expansion, and it hits the game next summer.

Square Enix revealed Dawtrail today, the first day of Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2023 in Las Vegas, with a new trailer showcasing the tropical New World known as Yok Tural and many beloved characters hanging out there. Shortly after the reveal, director Naoki Yoshida took the stage to discuss the expansion as part of the Fan Festival’s keynote presentation.

Check out the Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion trailer for yourself below:

Yoshida says the logo art for Dawntrail was created by Yoshitaka Amano using the color gold, which is the theme color of this expansion. You can check out the Dawntrail logo below:

Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail Expansion MMO Summer 2024 Release Date

Speaking to the story, Yoshida says, “We want to bring the very best summer vacation a hero could possibly have” to the Warriors of Light (the players). Without spoiling the events of 2021’s Endwalker expansion, Yoshida says Dawntrail is a significant shift from the previous expansion. Where Endwalker was dark, with the end of the universe on the line, Dawntrail is brighter and seemingly lighter in tone.

“It’s a new beginning of Final Fantasy XIV [and] the theme is a journey of discovery. As you know, the arc we’ve been on from 1.0 to Endwalker about Hydaelyn and Zodiark has concluded. So you can think of this as our first step into a new story for Final Fantasy XIV.”

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II Warzone Season 5 Operators Nicki Minaj Snoop Dogg 21 Savage Lara Croft

Tomb raider Lara Croft and hip hop artists Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, and 21 Savage are joining Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone sometime during Season 5, which launches next month.

More specifically, Season 5 of Modern Warfare II and Warzone begins August 2 and it’s during this season Lara Croft, Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, and 21 Savage will join the game as playable Operators. Lara Croft will arrive as an Operator bundle on the store mid-season, as will 21 Savage, but Snoop Dogg will arrive in the launch window and Nicki Minaj hits the game “in-season,” according to a Call of Duty blog post about Season 5.

Call of Duty brings these musical artists to the game to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop. Anyone who logs in between August 7 and August 16 on four separate days within that time period will receive a free gift. The first three days will grant a War Track from the 80s, 90, or 2000s. On the fourth login day, you will receive a special Weapon Blueprint.

Kotaku contacted Activision to confirm that Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, and 21 Savage did voiceover work for their Operators. Here’s a look at Nicki Minaj and Snoop Dogg in-game, with a tease of 21 Savage’s Operator (Activision has not released an image of the Lara Croft Operator):

There’s plenty more coming to Modern Warfare II and Warzone in Season 5, including four new maps at launch – two core maps and two gunfight maps – and a mid-season core map. Additional operators, weapons, game modes, and more will be added to the game, and you can read about all that in the Call of Duty blog post here

Finally, Season 5 will feature a special event revealing the 2023 Call of Duty game.

“Drop into Call of Duty: Warzone to experience the worldwide reveal for Call of Duty 2023 in a limited-time event,” the blog post reads. “Join the ranks of Shadow Company to take on Konni forces and secure the chemical weapon threat before it’s too late. Stay tuned to Call of Duty channels for more information about the upcoming reveal.”

Season 5 of Modern Warfare II and Warzone launches on August 2 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

For more about the game, read Game Informer’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II review. Read about how Sony has signed a 10-year agreement with Microsoft to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation after that.

Subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online can now access two of the most beloved Game Boy Color games of all time. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons join the roster of playable classic games as part of the Nintendo Switch Online's Game Boy catalog

As was true with the original Game Boy Color cartridges, you can experience the games on their own in any order that you wish, but if you link them together through a password system, some characters and enemies will change, some items can be upgraded, and you can take part in the climactic final battle. It's also worth noting that these games served as Hidemaro Fujibayashi's directorial debut within the Legend of Zelda franchise. Fujibayashi would go on to direct The Minish Cap, Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

The Nintendo Switch has steadily become one of the best places to experience the Legend of Zelda series. From Switch releases like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and the Link's Awakening remake to nearly every classic Zelda game available through Nintendo Switch Online and its Expansion Pack, Zelda fans can enjoy nearly every beloved mainline entry – though Wind Waker and Twilight Princess remain conspicuously absent. However, with the Oracle games now available, fans of Link and his adventures have two more easy-to-access adventures on Nintendo's massively successful hybrid system.

To see where the Oracle games fall on the list of every mainline Zelda, head to our rankings here.

When Sonic Mania arrived in 2017, it was a massive success for the franchise. So much so that it seemed inevitable that a sequel developed in conjunction with Christian Whitehead, PagodaWest Games, and Headcannon would be next for the Blue Blur. Unfortunately, it never happened. We asked both Takashi Iizuka and Christian Whitehead what happened to Sonic Mania 2.

Headcannon continued working with the Sonic brand through 2022's Sonic Origins and its 2023 update Sonic Origins Plus, while Whitehead founded his own studio, Evening Star, alongside fellow Sonic Mania developers in 2018. This past June, Evening Star announced its first game, titled Penny's Big Breakaway, coming in early 2024.

Sonic Mania

Instead of the expected Sonic Mania 2, in June 2023, Sega, Sonic Team, and development studio Arzest (headed up by Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima) announced Sonic Superstars. The game feels like a continuation of what Sonic Mania accomplished in 2017, but with modern visuals, special Emerald Powers, cooperative gameplay, and exclusively all-new zones. However, many wondered why Sonic Mania 2, which seems like it would have been an ultimate slam-dunk hit, never came to fruition.

In 2021, reports from a gaming insider named Zippo surfaced that internal plans to create a true successor to Sonic Mania had been scrapped due to differences between Sonic Mania's external developers and Sega. While not directly confirming or commenting on that particular report, Iizuka confirms that he had talks with Whitehead following the release of Mania.

"There was a period after the development of Sonic Mania when we worked with them to consider concepts for the next generation of Classic Sonic," Iizuka says. "It's too bad that it didn't become a finished game. Still, I'm pleased that the next generation of Classic Sonic that we talked about with them has been achieved with Superstars."

Sonic Superstars Sonic Superstars

One major hurdle to providing a true successor to Sonic Mania is that Iizuka and Sonic Team wanted to move away from the pixel-art graphics with the next new title in the Classic Sonic series. "When you make a 2D game using pixel art, you kind of end up targeting a very specific core audience," he says. "We wanted to bring this game to as many people as possible and in order to really make it look and feel as appealing to a wider audience, we needed to use the 3D assets to really give it that current look. But we do know that core fans want that old Classic Sonic look, they want that old classic Sonic feel, so we focused on making sure the controls were solid and the look and the feel was really representative of a classic Sonic game."

Whitehead backs up this story with his own recounting of the events. "When we started Evening Star, it was always our goal to move beyond 2D pixel art into 3D games, and develop all-new, original IP," he says. "Evening Star did work with Sega to explore possible directions Classic Sonic could go after the success of Sonic Mania. Sonic Mania 2 was never in development, though, because we actually agreed early on that we should try to make something fresh, like hand-drawn 2D or 2.5D. At the same time, Evening Star was developing our new Star Engine, so we also ended up making a cool Sonic prototype that played with depth in 2.5D, and some other gameplay ideas."

Following those initial planning sessions and a mutual decision to not proceed with development, Evening Star began work on Penny's Big Breakaway. "As Iizuka-san said, though, [Evening Star] did not continue to full production on the game, at which point Arzest took the helm and made Superstars alongside Sonic Team," Whitehead says. "We moved forward with our plans to develop an original 3D title, which is, of course, Penny's Big Breakaway! Superstars looks awesome and our team is really excited to play it when it comes out."

Penny's Big Breakaway Penny's Big Breakaway

Whitehead also dashed away one of the big points of speculation among Sonic fans: that Sonic Mania 2 falling through was the result of bad blood between Sega and members of Evening Star. "Contrary to any rumors, we maintain a friendly relationship with Sega and hope fans are pumped to play both games once they release," he says.

Though Whitehead and his team aren't involved with Sonic Superstars, the influence of their work and ideas is apparent. "A lot of the things that we talked about with Christian, you know, 'Let's make it a visually rich game that's not based in pixel. Let's not do the Mania thing of reusing stuff. Let's make something brand new with all-new levels,' that's where the start of the concepting happened after Mania, but everything came to a stop," Iizuka says. "When we kicked off Sonic Superstars with Ohshima-san's team, a lot of the conversations that we had with Christian were already in our heads, and we did start creating a new game already in a similar vein of, 'Let's make something new' and 'Let's make something not pixel.'"

Even beyond some concepts seemingly making the jump from the early Sonic Mania 2 concepts to Sonic Superstars, Sonic Mania's success was instrumental in the creation of Sonic Superstars. "During Sonic Mania's development, I didn't expect this level of fan reaction or success," Iizuka says. "That success created the opportunity to think about the next generation of Classic Sonic and led to Sonic Superstars. Sonic Mania helped us realize that fans still wanted and enjoyed the Classic series."

Sonic Superstars Sonic Superstars

On Twitter, Whitehead has provided further confirmation that he approves of the work being done on Sonic Superstars, with one retweet about the game's physics engine simply containing the thumbs-up emoji, and another tweet stating, "Will have more to say on this when it's appropriate, but the Mania physics were indeed fully translated to modern 3D."

Despite Whitehead's confirmation that this work was done, Iizuka says the programming is completely unique to Sonic Superstars, created from the ground-up by Arzest. "The team referenced not only Mania, but we referenced Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Mania when we were creating Sonic Superstars," Iizuka says. "The game was created from zero – from absolutely nothing – but we were still looking at all those four Classic games and creating physics that are going to match and feel like what the Classic series needs to be, from scratch. When we're talking about the Classic series and how we're referencing the physics, those are the four titles we were looking at."

Because of all that, Sonic Superstars looks to not be the Sonic Mania 2 that many envisioned or expected, but instead a spiritual successor. The physics play much like fans of Sonic Mania and the other beloved Classic Sonic games play, but with modern visuals and other various features. Sonic Superstars is set to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC this fall. “This is gonna be fun!” exclaims Sweet Tooth as he lobs his machete towards Anthony Mackie’s John Doe, who narrowly dodges the weapon as it careens into a casino slot machine.

I’m not sure I agree with the iconic murder clown. I’m watching the first teaser for Peacock’s Twisted Metal, and while I wasn’t sure what to expect from an adaptation of one of my favorite childhood franchises, whatever hopes I had fell away watching this strange out-of-context clip. Sweet Tooth dancing to and singing the lyrics to Sisqó’s “Thong Song?” Showing a comedic fistfight instead of vehicles blowing each other up? I know the showrunners are aiming for laughs, but what have they done to my game?

After watching the show’s first season, I must confess: I really like Twisted Metal.

Before Joel and Ellie, Kratos, Nathan Drake, and even Crash Bandicoot were the faces of PlayStation, there was Twisted Metal. The franchise popularized the now-dormant car combat genre thanks to its wildly fun gameplay, dark humor, and a demented cast of characters – notably its mascot, Sweet Tooth. The chaotic action carried players through numerous entries, from its highest highs (Twisted Metal 2, Twisted Metal: Black) to its lowest lows (Twisted Metal 3 and 4).

Despite its success, the series has been hibernating since its enjoyable but forgettable 2012 reboot. Hope for a revival unexpectedly arose when Pea‑ cock announced a 10-episode live-action adaptation. Helmed by Cobra Kai scribe Michael Jonathan Smith alongside Deadpool writers Rhett Smith and Paul Wernick, Twisted Metal stars John Doe, an amnesiac delivery driver (dubbed a Milkman) in a post-apocalyptic United States. At the dawn of the 21st century, a calamity caused society to collapse. Now, 20 years later, remnants of humanity have huddled in walled cities across the now Divided States of America. Those living outside these shelters fight daily for survival on the lawless open roads, which numerous gang factions and deranged personalities dominate.

Series fans may tilt their heads at this setup, which sounds closer to Mad Max than Twisted Metal. The games have always centered around a singular concept: drivers compete in a death tournament organized by Calypso, a mysterious man with the power to grant any wish to the victor (usually with an unfortunate, monkey paw-style twist). Though different, this approach successfully introduces new layers to the mythos I didn’t know I wanted.

Firstly, it made me care about the people behind the wheel, something I never had outside of Sweet Tooth. John Doe, a man tasked with delivering a special package to earn permanent residence in New San Francisco, is a goofy idiot with a good heart. Pairing him with Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz), a mysterious loner on a revenge quest, leads to some fun expletive-laden bickering, not unlike the banter dominating the Guardians of the Galaxy films. In fact, the series’ tone is highly reminiscent of James Gunn’s work, particularly HBO’s Peacemaker. That’s a compliment. Twisted Metal’s often idiotic, violent humor doesn’t always land, but it’s fully aware of how stupid it is and embraces silliness in ways I usually find more entertaining than cringy. Highlights include Stu, a clumsy, well-meaning everyman played by Mike Mitchell, but the series’ best character is its most recognizable: Sweet Tooth.

Voiced by Will Arnett and physically performed by Joe Seanoa, AKA Samoa Joe, the pair capture the clown’s intimidating presence and unhinged, sometimes humorous, personality. The show manages a great balance of making Sweet Tooth scary when he needs to be and a fun-loving outcast you almost want to hang out with … almost. Agent Stone, the show’s main villain portrayed by Thomas Haden Church, offers the perfect foil as a cold, law-obsessed sheriff running a brutal police force hellbent on restoring order.

Some adaptations almost feel ashamed of their source material, but Twisted Metal embraces its roots through copious references. Some are as blatantly ridiculous as John entering a Twisted Metal 2 cheat code to activate his car’s defenses. Others are subtle, with some cameos going over my head until I looked up their name in a Wiki. The best are self-aware; expect to see a few faces from the generally reviled Twisted Metal 4 treated like utter losers and bullet fodder. In a few cases, the show redeems less beloved drivers – I never thought I’d be rooting for Flower Power.

The story juggles multiple threads without getting overburdened and does a solid job fleshing out John, Quiet, Stone, and Sweet Tooth with flashbacks detailing their respective backstories. The performances are generally good, and the story features quite a bit of heart with some surprisingly touching moments. Though I sometimes felt emotional whiplash jumping from hyper goofy spectacle to deadly serious plot twist, the show manages a respectable tonal balance.

Unfortunately, Twisted Metal doesn’t feature nearly as much car combat as I expected; most vehicular skirmishes wrap up in a few minutes, and much of the prolonged action is on foot. Without spoiling, the plot eventually rewards patient fans with what they’re looking for, with a satisfying finale that leaves enough doors open to lure viewers back for a potential second season. The best compliment I can give is that I hope a second season happens. While I was uneasy, I had a blast once I settled into the show’s groove and the plot hit the gas. Like the games, Twisted Metal is undeniably stupid and gratuitously violent, but it swings for the fences and hits home runs more often than not.

Twisted Metal premieres on Peacock on July 27.

Stray Gods The Role-Playing Musical Exclusive Single Track Adrift Laura Bailey Grace

Game Informer can exclusively reveal a full track from Summerfall Studios’ upcoming Stray Gods: The Role-Playing Musical called “Adrift.”

This track features the voice of Laura Bailey (Abby in The Last of Us Part II, Mary Jane in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2), who plays protagonist Grace, a college dropout in the game’s modern fantasy world granted the power of a Muse. Grace uses this power “to find out the truth behind her predecessor’s death before time runs out.” You might also recognize Ashley Johnson (Ellie in The Last of Us) in the song. She voices Calliope, who joins Bailey’s Grace in “Adrift.”

Sonic Superstars emerged as one of the most exciting announcements to come out of Summer Game Fest 2023, and now we're diving deeper into the exciting 2D adventure starring Sega's Blue Blur. We spent two days in Sonic Team's studio in Burbank, California playing through nearly half the game and speaking with the developers behind the next Classic Sonic title. The cover story, along with our exclusive coverage spread out over the next month, should give you all the information you need about Sonic Superstars before it comes out this fall.

Our cover art this month was created by Mark Hughes, who has done work for IDW Comics and Sega. The art depicts the four playable characters – Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy – standing in the spotlight on the front, with Dr. Eggman begrudgingly refusing to stand in the spotlight on the back. The art includes Chaos Emeralds to emphasize the new Emerald Power mechanic present in Sonic Superstars. You'll learn a lot more about the Emerald Powers, never-before-seen zones, the return of Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima to the series, and much more in our 12-page cover story!

But that's not all that's in this issue! Within the pages of issue 358 of Game Informer, Blake Hester delivers a profile on the fascinating career of Hi-Fi Rush's director John Johanas. Contributor Demi Phillips also has an examination of the burgeoning gaming scene in Nigeria. Meanwhile, contributor  Ben Bertoli celebrates 40 years of the Nintendo Famicom and its sometimes bizarre history. Elsewhere in the issue, Charles Harte goes in-depth with the upcoming musical RPG Stray Gods, and Kyle Hilliard has an opinion piece on wanting gaming experiences, not obligations.

That's not even mentioning our full suite of previews, which includes Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Payday 3, Mortal Kombat 1, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Persona 5 Tactica, Penny's Big Breakaway, Wild Card Football, and plenty more!

Here's a closer look at this month's cover:
